UAE Visa Rejected? 9 Reasons Residence & Work Visas Fail in 2026 (And How to Fix Each)

Your new employer sends a two-line message on a Thursday: the application came back "rejected." No reason given, and a start date ten days away.

If your UAE visa was rejected and nobody can tell you why, start here. Below are the nine causes we see most on residence, employment and family files at our Deira counter, the authority that stops each, and the fix before you pay to file again.

Visit-visa refusals follow a different process; they get a short section near the end.

Why do rejections feel more random in 2026?

A residence or work file passes several gates: the MOHRE work permit, the entry permit from ICP or GDRFA Dubai, the medical, a security check, and the residence visa. Any of them can stop it, and the status rarely says which. Our employment visa process guide maps the full sequence.

This year added a requirement for work visas. Among the documents for employment applications, ICP's visa issuance service now lists "a certificate of good conduct, duly attested as required, according to the announced categories." A file that passed last year can now stall on one missing attestation.

Residence visa rejected or returned? Read the status first

From our counter: a returned application was sent back for correction, such as a blurred scan, a missing page or a wrong field, and you fix and resubmit. A rejected application was refused, and the practical route is a new application once the cause is fixed. Not sure which status you're looking at, or where to check it? Our UAE visa status check guide shows which portal to use and what each status usually means.

Don't count on a refund. We found no published rule refunding issuance fees on rejected residence or employment applications; ICP's fee refund service covers financial guarantees on approved applications, for an AED 25 fee.

Where do you find out why your UAE visa was rejected?

Ask whoever filed first: your employer's PRO, the typing centre, or you on the app. Then go to your emirate's authority. Per u.ae, GDRFA handles Dubai (800 5111 inside the UAE, +971 4 313 9999 from abroad) and ICP covers Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

ICP's call centre is 600522222, and complaints go through cc.icp.gov.ae (ICP FAQ). For a Dubai file, GDRFA takes complaints through its website, app and the AMER line on 800 5111 (GDRFA).

Employment visa rejected in Dubai? The 9 causes, gate by gate

1. A security check flag

Every residence applicant "must also pass a security check," per u.ae's residence visa rules. The criteria aren't published, so these rejections often arrive unexplained.

Fix: From our counter, rule out an open case, an unpaid fine or an absconding report in your name first. If none apply, raise it through cc.icp.gov.ae (or GDRFA's complaint channels for a Dubai file) and consider a UAE lawyer; resubmitting the same file unchanged gives the system nothing new to assess.

2. A failed or pending medical

Per the same page, residence applicants aged 18+ must take a medical test to prove they are medically fit. The u.ae screening list covers HIV, Hepatitis B, leprosy, syphilis and TB (plus pregnancy for domestic workers), and for HIV and leprosy "residency is denied or not renewed for positive cases." TB is handled case by case.

Fix: if the result is pending, wait: in Dubai, a standard Dubai Health medical costs AED 270 and takes 24 working hours (Dubai Health). For a positive result, ask the medical centre what applies before anyone refiles.

3. A photo that fails ICP standards

ICP's photo guidance asks for a recent, high-quality image on a white background, with clear facial features, ICAO standards, and no hats or sunglasses. From our counter, phone photos against a cream wall are a regular cause of returns.

Fix and pre-check: retake it at a studio that knows ICAO specs; we screen photos before the system sees them.

4. Your name is spelled differently across documents

This is practitioner knowledge, not a published rule, but it's one of the most common problems we catch. The passport says "Mohammed Abdul Rahman," the degree says "Mohd A. Rahman," and the offer letter drops the middle name.

Fix and pre-check: treat the passport as the master spelling and check every field against it. Where a certificate can't match, ask your sponsor's PRO which document to correct before refiling.

5. A past overstay or an unfinished cancellation

Old files follow you. Per u.ae, residence overstay fines are AED 50 a day, a residence visa is nullified after more than 180 days continuously outside the UAE, sponsors must cancel dependants' visas before their own, and employers must cancel the MOHRE contract before ICP cancels the visa.

GDRFA's legal awareness page says employers must report absconding within 10 days, and a false report is fined AED 5,000. From our counter, anything left open can block a new file.

Fix: pay the fines, finish the old cancellation, or challenge a false absconding report before refiling.

6. A missing or unattested good conduct certificate (new in 2026)

This is the ICP document mentioned above. Ghana's foreign ministry, for example, told its citizens the good conduct certificate requirement for work visas applies "under the UAE Cabinet's decision," with phases from 30 March and 20 July 2026 (Khaleej Times). Published lists for other nationalities disagree, so we don't repeat them.

Fix: ask your sponsor whether your nationality is covered, then get the certificate at home and complete its attestation before filing.

7. The job title doesn't fit the licence

Per u.ae's work permit page, the occupation "must be aligned with the business activity of the establishment." A general trading licence hiring a "software engineer" is inviting a MOHRE refusal.

Fix and pre-check: match the offer-letter title to a licensed activity, or add the activity first; we compare the two line by line.

8. Documents that don't hold up

The same page lets MOHRE refuse a permit when the establishment provides incorrect documents. Degrees issued abroad must be authenticated by the foreign ministry in the country of origin and then by the UAE embassy or consulate there, and some professions also need UAE ministry attestation (u.ae).

Fix: never submit a certificate you can't trace to its issuer, and finish the attestation chain first.

9. Problems in the sponsor's company file

Sometimes it isn't about you. MOHRE may refuse, not renew or cancel permits if the company is fictitious, doesn't carry out its registered activity, or isn't WPS-compliant, and the licence must be valid and free of violations (u.ae). GDRFA also fines a company AED 100 a month for an unrenewed establishment card (GDRFA).

Fix: only the sponsor can clear this, so ask HR which violation is open.

Bonus: the entry permit that quietly expires

Not a rejection, but it kills files too. Per ICP, you must enter within the entry permit's 60-day validity and complete residence within 60 days of entry, on a passport valid for at least six months.

UAE visit visa rejected? What changes

A visit visa has no MOHRE permit, residency medical, good conduct certificate or employer licence check, so causes 2, 6, 7 and 9 don't apply. Ask whoever applied first, whether a travel agency, an airline or a relative in the UAE, because they hold the application details.

From our counter, photo problems and old overstays still catch visit applications. Our guide to UAE visa types explains how visit and residence visas differ.

Should you refile it yourself or have a professional do it?

You can learn which gate rejected a file through two years of trial and error, paying for every refile. Or you can learn the sequence in a structured course and spot these problems before they happen.

Our Visa Course covers practical UAE visa processing. For the full role, the KHDA-certified Certified PRO Officer Program runs three days, taught by Government Relations experts who have processed 500+ visas; it's AED 2,890, or roughly AED 720 a month over four months with Tamara or Tabby.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my UAE visa rejected without a reason?

Security criteria aren't published, and statuses rarely name the gate that stopped the file. Ask the filer, then GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates).

How long should I wait before reapplying?

We found no published waiting period. Reapply once the cause is fixed, not before.

Do I get my money back if my visa is rejected?

Don't assume so. We found no published refund rule for rejected residence or employment files.

Can a rejection "for security reasons" be fixed?

It depends on the cause, which isn't published. Rule out open cases, fines and absconding reports, then raise it at cc.icp.gov.ae (or with GDRFA for a Dubai file), ideally with a UAE lawyer.

Does a visa rejection mean I'm banned from the UAE?

Not necessarily. A rejection is a decision on one application; ask GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates) whether any wider restriction is on record.
