Emirates ID in 2026: Application, Renewal and the Mistakes That Cause Delays

The step-by-step guide from a typing centre that processes these daily.

Your Emirates ID touches everything — bank accounts, phone contracts, government services, even building access. Here is how to get it right the first time.

You Are Standing in Line at a Typing Centre and Something Is Wrong

You arrived early. You brought your passport, your visa page, and a photo you had taken at the mall last week. You filled in the form, paid the fee, and waited. Then the person behind the counter tells you the photo does not meet ICP specifications. Or that your medical test results have not been uploaded yet. Or that your entry permit status change was never finalised, so the system will not let them proceed.

You are not the first person this has happened to. At Sarmat's typing centre in Deira, we see it every single day — residents, new employees, business owners, and family dependants who thought the Emirates ID process was straightforward, only to discover that one overlooked detail has added days or weeks to their timeline.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Emirates ID process in 2026 — new applications, renewals, replacements, and the five mistakes that cause the most delays. Whether you are handling this for yourself or processing it professionally, the steps below will save you time, money, and frustration.

Why Your Emirates ID Matters More Than Ever in 2026

The Emirates ID is no longer just an identification card. Over the past few years, the UAE government has steadily integrated it into virtually every interaction you have with public and private services.

Your Emirates ID number is now your unified identifier across MOHRE, GDRFA, ICP, banks, telecom providers, and even some private employers. Visa stamps in passports are being phased out in favour of e-visas linked to your Emirates ID. Medical insurance, WPS salary payments, and even some rental contracts reference your Emirates ID rather than your passport.

An expired, delayed, or incorrectly issued Emirates ID does not just mean you are carrying the wrong card. It means frozen bank accounts, suspended SIM cards, inability to process government transactions, and — if it is linked to an expired visa — potential overstay fines of AED 100+ per day.

Getting this right is not optional. It is the single document that connects every part of your legal presence in the UAE.

New Emirates ID Application: Step-by-Step for 2026

If you are arriving in the UAE for the first time — whether on an employment visa, a family sponsorship, an investor visa, or any other residency category — here is the exact sequence for obtaining your Emirates ID.

Step 1: Complete your entry permit or status change

Before you can apply for an Emirates ID, your entry permit must be active or your in-country status change must be finalised through GDRFA. The Emirates ID system is linked to your immigration record. If the status change has not been processed, the typing centre's system will reject your application.

Step 2: Complete your medical fitness test

Most visa categories require a medical fitness test at a DHA-approved centre. This includes a blood test and chest X-ray. Results are uploaded electronically and typically take 1-3 business days. Your Emirates ID application can be submitted before results are ready, but the card will not be issued until the medical is cleared.

Step 3: Prepare your documents

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity.
  • Passport-size photo meeting ICP specifications: white background, no glasses, no head covering (unless religious), face centred, specific pixel dimensions for digital submission.
  • Entry permit or visa copy showing your current immigration status.
  • Sponsor details — your employer's establishment card number or your sponsor's Emirates ID number.

Step 4: Submit your application

Applications are submitted through one of three channels:

  • ICA Smart app — the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security's official mobile app. You can complete the entire application digitally, including uploading your photo and paying fees.
  • Typing centre — visit any authorised typing centre. Staff will complete the form, capture or upload your photo, and submit the application on your behalf. This is the most common route for people who want to avoid errors.
  • Amer centre — government-operated service centres that handle Emirates ID alongside other residency services.

Step 5: Biometrics capture

After your application is submitted, you will need to visit an ICP service centre or designated typing centre for biometrics — fingerprints and a digital photograph. Some typing centres can handle both the application and biometrics in a single visit.

Step 6: Receive your Emirates ID

Standard processing takes 5-10 business days. Urgent processing (available for an additional fee) reduces this to 2-3 business days. You can track your application status through the ICA Smart app or the ICP website using your application reference number.

Your card is delivered to the address you provided during application, or you can collect it from a designated pick-up point.

Emirates ID Renewal: What Changes in 2026

Renewing your Emirates ID is generally simpler than a new application, but it comes with its own set of requirements that trip people up.

When to renew

Your Emirates ID is tied to your visa validity. When your visa is renewed, your Emirates ID must be renewed as well. In most cases, the two processes run in parallel — your employer or sponsor initiates the visa renewal, and the Emirates ID renewal is submitted at the same time or shortly after.

You can start the renewal process up to 30 days before your current Emirates ID expires. We strongly recommend not waiting until the last week — processing backlogs during peak seasons (September-October and January-February) can push timelines beyond 10 business days.

Renewal process

  • Ensure your visa renewal is processed first — or at least initiated. The Emirates ID system checks your visa status before approving the renewal.
  • Submit through the ICA Smart app, a typing centre, or Amer centre — the same channels as new applications.
  • Updated photo — if your appearance has changed significantly, you will need a new photo. Even if it has not, some renewals require a fresh photo. Always bring one that meets ICP specifications.
  • Biometrics — not always required for renewals. If your biometrics are already on file and your fingerprints were captured within the last 5 years, you may be exempt. The system will tell you during the application.

Fees

Emirates ID fees are set by ICP and vary by duration:

  • 1-year card: AED 100 (card fee) + typing centre service fee (typically AED 40-70).
  • 2-year card: AED 200 + service fee.
  • 3-year card: AED 300 + service fee.
  • Urgent processing: Additional AED 150-250 depending on the centre.

These fees do not include any visa-related costs, which are separate.

Replacing a Lost, Damaged, or Stolen Emirates ID

If your Emirates ID is lost, damaged, or stolen, you need to apply for a replacement. The process is similar to a renewal but requires an additional step.

  • File a police report if the card was lost or stolen. You will need the report number for your replacement application.
  • Submit a replacement application through the ICA Smart app or a typing centre. You will need your passport, visa copy, police report number (if applicable), and a new photo.
  • Replacement fee: AED 300 for a standard replacement, plus the card fee for the remaining validity period and typing centre service charges.

Do not delay this. Without a valid Emirates ID, your access to banking, mobile services, and government transactions is effectively frozen. If you travel frequently for work, a lost Emirates ID can also create complications at UAE immigration — your Emirates ID number is now checked at border control.

The 5 Mistakes That Cause Emirates ID Delays

After years of processing Emirates ID applications at our Deira typing centre, these are the five errors we see most frequently — and every one of them is avoidable.

1. Photo that does not meet ICP specifications

This is the single most common cause of Emirates ID application rejections. ICP requires a specific photo format: white background, face centred, no glasses, no shadows, proper dimensions. Photos taken at random studios or cropped from existing images are rejected more often than not. The ICA Smart app has a built-in photo capture tool that guides you, or any experienced typing centre can take a compliant photo on the spot.

2. Medical test results not uploaded yet

Your medical fitness test results are uploaded electronically by the testing centre. If you apply for your Emirates ID the same day as your medical, the results may not be in the system yet. The Emirates ID application will be accepted, but the card will not be issued until the medical is cleared. People who do not realise this end up calling the typing centre repeatedly, thinking something went wrong. The fix is simple: wait 2-3 business days after your medical before expecting your Emirates ID to be processed.

3. Applying before the visa status change is finalised

This is extremely common with in-country status changes — when you switch from a visit visa to an employment visa without leaving the UAE. The status change goes through GDRFA and takes 2-5 business days. If you rush to the typing centre on the day your employer submits the status change, the system will not recognise your new visa status. The application gets stuck or rejected. Always confirm with your employer or PRO that the status change is showing as complete in the system before applying for your Emirates ID.

4. Expired passport during the application process

Your passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity at the time of your Emirates ID application. If your passport expires during the processing period, your application can be delayed or require resubmission. This catches people who are renewing both their passport and their visa simultaneously — sequence matters. Renew your passport first, then your visa, then your Emirates ID.

5. Not tracking application status

The ICA Smart app and ICP website allow you to check your application status in real time. People who do not check assume the worst when their card does not arrive on time. In many cases, the application simply requires an additional document or a minor correction — but if you do not check the status, you will not know until weeks later. Make it a habit to check your application status every 2-3 days until your card is delivered.

Emirates ID for Specific Visa Categories

While the basic process is the same, certain visa categories have specific requirements worth noting.

Employment visa holders

Your employer's PRO officer typically handles the Emirates ID application as part of the overall visa processing. The establishment card number is required. If your employer is new and the establishment card has not been issued yet, your Emirates ID application cannot proceed — this is a common delay for employees joining newly formed companies.

Family dependants

Dependants (spouse and children) apply for Emirates ID after the family sponsorship visa is stamped. The sponsor's Emirates ID number is required on the application. Children under 15 are exempt from biometrics but still need an Emirates ID card.

Investor and partner visa holders

If you are sponsoring yourself through your own company, your Emirates ID application references your company's establishment card. Ensure the establishment card is active and up to date — expired or suspended establishment cards will block the Emirates ID application.

Golden visa holders

Golden visa holders receive a 10-year Emirates ID card, matching their visa duration. The application process is the same, but the fee structure reflects the longer validity period. Golden visa applications processed through ICP tend to have faster Emirates ID turnaround times.

How to Check Your Emirates ID Status

Once your application is submitted, you can track its progress through several channels:

  • ICA Smart app: Download the app, log in with your UAE Pass, and navigate to the "My Transactions" section. Your Emirates ID application will show its current status — submitted, under processing, ready for collection, or delivered.
  • ICP website: Visit the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security website and use the "Application Status" tool. You will need your application reference number.
  • SMS notifications: ICP sends SMS updates to the mobile number you provided during application. Make sure the number is correct and active — this is the most common notification method.

If your application has been "under processing" for more than 10 business days (standard) or 5 business days (urgent), contact ICP directly or visit the typing centre where you submitted the application. There may be a document issue that requires your attention.

This Is What PRO Officers Handle All Day

Everything in this article — the application steps, the renewal process, the status checks, the troubleshooting — is the daily work of PRO officers and government service professionals across Dubai.

At any given typing centre, a trained staff member processes dozens of Emirates ID applications per day. They know which photos will be rejected before they are submitted. They know to check the visa status before starting the application. They know when a medical delay is normal and when it signals a problem that needs escalation.

This is not guesswork. It is a professional skill that companies are actively hiring for. Businesses in Dubai need people who can process Emirates IDs, visas, labour cards, and establishment cards without errors, without delays, and without the kind of mistakes that cost their employees time and their companies money.

If you found this article useful because you needed to sort out your own Emirates ID, consider this: there are people who do this as a full-time career, earning AED 6,000-12,000 per month, and the demand for certified professionals keeps growing as the UAE's population and regulatory requirements expand.

You can learn these processes on the job over a couple of years. Or you can learn them in a structured, KHDA-certified programme that covers every government transaction type, every portal, and every compliance requirement — with 3 months of hands-on mentorship from professionals who have processed over 500 visas and thousands of Emirates ID applications.
